Centaur’s BCI Flexible Fund was recognised as the Best Flexible Allocation Fund in 2016, at the annual Morningstar South Africa Fund Awards held in Cape Town on 1 March 2017.
“The Morningstar Awards offer due recognition to the highest-performing funds and fund houses that demonstrated excellence over the course of the previous year. Each of the finalists in the awards has surpassed their peers, selected for the ability to deliver strong returns after adjusting for risk, and demonstrating potential for sustained returns in the long-term,” commented Tal Nieburg, managing director for Morningstar South Africa.
The Centaur team celebrate their Morningstar award.
Roger Williams of Centaur believes the award was earned by the investment team consistently applying their calculated investment methodology: “At Centaur we take our job as custodians of our customers’ money very seriously; our mission at Centaur Asset Management is intelligent investing, an investment philosophy that has been distilled into numerous heuristic models which allow us to identify exceptional investment opportunities. We have an experienced team of analysts who do in-depth research into our opportunity set. We weigh up value vs growth and quality. We then use our stock picking engine and risk management framework to decide which stock is worth including within our diversified portfolio of shares. In addition, we have proprietary macro-indicators which guide asset allocation. Our methodology seeks to create a portfolio with the best risk reward ratio for our investors.”
Clearly the formula works – This is the second time the Centaur BCI Flexible Fund has won the award after receiving it for the period ending 2014. It has delivered the best risk-adjusted returns over 5 years to 31 December 2016, of all 71 funds in the South African Multi Asset Flexible subcategory, achieving a compound return of 19% per annum (source: Profile Data) a figure well above the Funds own benchmark of 11% per annum over the same period. Since inception on the 1 December 2004, this Fund has delivered a compound annual return of 19% to the end of 2016. Whilst the Centaur BCI Balanced Fund which has been running since 1 July 2013 delivered annualised returns of 14% since inception to the end of 2016.
